How To Interact With Your Twitch Chat

A Request From a ReaderWe had a friend write in and ask for ways to be more interactive and engaging in the chat. I think this is a great topic for today because it's literally one of the most important parts of what we do as streamers. Bad Habits (not the Ed Sheeran kind)There's a bad habit that I've seen most streamers who are struggling to grow fall into, whether it be Gamers or DJ Streamers. It's the habit of getting too much into the music or the game and basically ignoring the chat. This is bad for the growth of your channel. For one thing, you'll have a tough time retaining your current viewers if they get bored. Viewers are looking to have a good time, with people they enjoy spending time with. It's up to us as the streamers to lead them and we can't do that if we're silent. What Do You Want?It really comes down to what you want out of your channel. Do you want to grow your channel into something bigger that could potentially give you the opportunity to do something you enjoy and make an income doing it or do you not care about growth and you just want to play music or play games online. That's up to you to decide but my assumption is (and the assumption I will always write to you from since you've signed up for this newsletter) is that you want to grow and create something bigger. Talk To The PeopleIf you want to grow, you've got to talk to your viewers. This approach may be unpopular amongst some streamers and even to some viewers. My take on this is that it will be different for every streamer so try and find a good balance between talking and playing music or the playing the game. You don't need to talk constantly but you do need to talk and engage. Pick your spots to talk. If you're playing music, try not to talk over the words, find places to talk where there isn't any signing or where it won't interfere with the song too much. What do you talk about? Watch the chat: The best way to find things to talk about is to watch the chat. Your chat will give you topics. Watch what people are saying and get into the conversation. It's kind of like you're at a party around a group of friends and you're all talking and sharing stories with each other. That's all it is. That's what we do on our stream every night. We hang out with our friends and - for lack of a better phrase - shoot the shit. We are just having fun, hanging out with friends. Plan topics ahead of time: Imagine you're the radio host of your own show. I've worked in radio and I can tell you that while some of the topics they discuss are off the cuff, most of them are prepared for ahead of time. They typically start planning tomorrow's show immediately after today's show ends. My wife and I keep tabs on things we did throughout our day or since our last stream. We'll jot those ides down as topics of discussion during our next stream. For example: yesterday my wife and I spent the day together. We went to breakfast, had a mimosa, went to Trader Joe's (my first time), went to lunch and had margarita's. We purposely brought that up in last nights show. We got ideas from our viewers of some of their favorite items from Trader Joe's, their favorite wines from there, etc. It was a great talking point and got the chat rolling. As people were chiming in, I was watching the chat and responding back to what they were saying to us. Focus on Who's ThereThis was extremely helpful for us when we were first starting out (and even still). Whether you have 5 people watching or 105 people, they choose your channel and that's special. Make sure those people have the time of their lives. Always focus on who's there, not who isn't - those who are there deserve that. This will not only help ensure those viewers return but also increases the likelihood that they will tell others about your stream. It's a good perspective to have and will help keep you same as well while you're trying to grow.
