Burnout and Self-Care

Welcome back! I took a brief hiatus from writing and even took off a coupe of streams over the last couple of weeks. The truth is, we had a lot going on and I was both exhausted and feeling like I wasn't getting enough time to do the things I both wanted and needed to get done. As I mentioned in a previous piece, Twitch DJing, streaming consistently and building a business around it isn't easy. It's not only a big time commitment, it's also a mental game. Burnout is real and we have to do some self-care when these feelings arise. There are several reasons you might experience these feelings. Maybe you've been going hard at a day job and are exhausted, maybe you want more "you" time or more family time, maybe your stream isn't progressing the way you'd hoped and you're feeling discouraged, maybe it's a combination or maybe it's other reasons altogether. So what do you do when you're feeling these feelings? That depends..."My stream isn't growing and I'm discouraged and frustrated": If you're discouraged because your stream isn't growing then I wouldn't advise you to take any time off. In fact, this could lead you to quitting altogether. In this situation, my advice is to think long and hard about why you're not growing and make some adjustments to your strategy. Here's an example of what I mean:Let's say, for example, you have a decent number of viewers when you're participating in a raid train. What happens when you stream outside of the raid train? Are your numbers the same or are they a lot lower. My guess is that, for most streamers who are Twitch Djing, it's the latter. The problem with doing too many raid trains is that everyone is sharing the same viewers. If you want to grow and build a sustainable business, you need to build your own community. The problem most Twitch DJing streamers have with doing it this way is that it's slower. It takes time to build a community while raid trains will get you viewers now. Instant gratification usually wins out. I promise you though, the payoff is huge. In this Friday's piece, we'll dive more into how to build your community organically but for now though, begin to think through this and I believe you'll have the "light bulb" moment. "I'm just exhausted, I have no time for me and/or my family and I need a break": If you're reasons for burnout are because you just have a lot going on, have no time for yourself and/or your family, then I absolutely encourage you to take a break and recharge. Don't feel like you have to push through because that will only lead to more burnout. This is what I was going through last week. It's also why I only stream 2-3 nights a week now whereas before I was Twitch DJing 5-6 nights a week. What helped me this week was spending some extra one-on-one time with my wife: we went to Universal, Volcano Bay, Trader Joe's, lunches, etc. I spent some extra time with my kids: we went to the arcade, did some rock climbing, played mini-golf, went to the library, played at the trampoline park, hit up Universal, and went to the pool. For myself, I played some golf, got some running in (I'm training for a Spartan Race in April), did some reading, I started a coding course and most importantly, got refocused on my "why". If you've experienced something similar then know that it's ok to take a break. If you haven't experience this yet, I'm sure you will at some point so keep this in the back of your mind and just know that's it's ok to rest, in fact, you'll feel better than ever afterwards and be ready to crush it. You don't have to always push through.Take care of yourself first and foremost and the rest tends to fall into place.
